LOS ANGELES – Experience a rarely seen peek behind-the-scenes of the ultra exclusive Met Gala in THE FIRST MONDAY IN MAY. Centering on the celebrated event taking place annually at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City the “ticket into the fashion event of the year” (Screen) arrives on DVD and Digital HD on August 2 from Magnolia Home Entertainment. Directed by acclaimed documentarian, Andrew Rossi (Page One: Inside The New York Times), THE FIRST MONDAY IN MAY depicts the “fasion world’s equivalent of the Super Bowl” (Vogue), highlighting the Costume Institute and its revolutionary curator, Andrew Bolton.

 

THE FIRST MONDAY IN MAY proves to be a fashion film not meant to be missed, follow Bolton and Gala co-chair and Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour during the crucial eight months before the show’s debut, as they travel from New York to Paris to Beijing to build support for their audacious endeavor. Revealing a fascinating look at the creation of The Met’s “China: Through the Looking Glass” exhibition, an exploration of Chinese-inspired Western fashions, the film explores how the gala continues to inspire high fashion, art, and culture. Diving into the debate of whether to view fashion as art, THE FIRST MONDAY IN MAY celebrates creativity for viewers and truly brings fashion to life.  Rossi speaks with renowned creators including including filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai as well as preeminent fashion designers Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Paul Gaultier, Guo Pei and John Galliano to provide insights on the relationship between art, craft and commerce. Synopsis

The First Monday in May follows the creation of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s most attended fashion exhibition in history, “China: Through The Looking Glass,” an exploration of Chinese-inspired Western fashions by Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton. With unprecedented access, filmmaker Andrew Rossi (Page One: Inside The New York Times) captures the collision of high fashion and celebrity at the Met Gala, one of the biggest global fashion events chaired every year by Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour. Featuring a cast of renowned artists in various fields (including filmmaker Wong Kar Wai and iconic fashion designers Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Paul Gaultier and John Galliano), as well as a host of contemporary pop icons like Rihanna, the movie dives into the debate about whether fashion should be viewed as art.
