Rick Warren Hosts Stars, Makers of The Good Lie

Lake Forest, CA – October 2, 2014: Saddleback Church pastor hails film about Sudanese Lost Boys as “Academy-Award quality”, urges parishioners to see it when it opens Friday.

Saddleback Church Pastor Rick Warren welcomed members of the cast and filmmakers behind the new film THE GOOD LIE to his church’s main Orange County campus Saturday afternoon to discuss the movie that is earning rave reviews from faith critics and Christian influencers.

“THE GOOD LIE is a beautiful movie, well-acted with brilliant cinematography,” Warren said. “There’s two great stories: One of them is the story that brings awareness to how millions of people are living in refugee camps around the world. The other story tells us you don’t have to be perfect to make a difference.

“I think it’s an Academy Award-quality movie.”

Warren interviewed two stars of the film – Emmanuel Jal and Ger Duany – and two producers – Molly Smith and Thad Luckinbill – during Saddleback’s 4 p.m. Saturday service. Jal and Duany lived elements of the story told in the film as children, forced to live as refugees when a civil war tore apart their home country of Sudan in the 1980s.

THE GOOD LIE tells the story of “Lost Boys” like Duany and Jal, young victims who traveled as many as a thousand miles on foot in search of safety. Fifteen years later, a humanitarian effort would bring 3600 lost boys and girls to America. In THE GOOD LIE, Philippe Falardeau, writer and director of the Oscar-nominated Foreign Language film MONSIEUR LAZHAR, brings the story of their survival and triumph to life. In addition to Jal and Duany, Sudanese actors Arnold Oceng and newcomer Kuoth Wiel star alongside Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon (WALK THE LINE) and Corey Stoll in a film written by Margaret Nagle, writer of the award-winning HBO projects BOARDWALK EMPIRE and WARM SPRINGS.

“I’ve had over a thousand members of my church serving in Kenya, over 1,200 of my members serving in Rwanda, and over 23,000 members serving in about 197 countries, and the most desperate things out there are these refugee camps,” Warren said. “So, I am just thrilled that THE GOOD LIE has been made. I just love this story. This is a movie I’m willing to put my name behind.”
