‘Peter Piper the Balloon Meister’ filmed in Part at Banana Factory Glass Studio in Bethlehem

The SouthSide Film Institute will show “GreasePaint” and “Peter Piper the Balloon Meister” Saturday, November 8 at the Charles A. Brown Ice House on Sand Island, 56 River Street, Bethlehem, Pa.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the films begin at 8 p.m. Cost is $10; $5 for students and seniors.

“Peter Piper the Balloon Meister” is the story of Peter Waldman, a multi-talented artist and entertainer. Ulli Gruber showcases Waldman’s two most outstanding talents, glassblowing and entertaining with balloons. This short film highlights the juxtaposition between similar forms in two mediums. Balloons are a free, loose, and creative process engaging the public, and glassblowing relies on planning, teamwork, and concentration on a final vision. A portion of this film was shot at the Hot Glass Studio at the Banana Factory in Bethlehem.

“GreasePaint” is a documentary film by Daniel Espeut that follows Joey Thurmond and his family as they travel around the country performing the art of American circus clowning. The overarching story focuses on Thurmond and his ability to balance the business and family life, but also included are circus performers who discuss the positive and negative connotations that people have of clowns. The audience sees the backstories of a few of the characters, including Thurmond’s rise from professional wrestler to police officer to clown. Espeut will be in attendance and available for Q&A after the film.

Shown at the 2014 SouthSide Film Festival, “GreasePaint” tied for the Linny and Beall Fowler Audience Award for Favorite Feature.
